Cave: Županova Jama

This cave may not be as well known as the Postojna Cave or the Škocjan Caves, but believe me, it’s definitely worth a visit!

Where can you find this cave?

Just south of Ljubljana, near the town of Grosuplje, you’ll find the Županova (jama) Cave. Jama is the Slovenian word for cave. It’s described as the most beautiful cave in the Dolenjska region. Županova Cave is easy to locate, as the entrance is right by the Grosuplje-Turjak road.

What can you expect?

The cave is 330 metres long and reaches a depth of 122 metres. To explore the beauty of this cave, you’ll need to descend 478 steps and follow a 600-metre path. But trust me, it’s worth every step! The cave has six chambers and contains all the wonders you’d expect from a karst cave: abysses, tunnels, various types of stalactites, shallow calcareous sinter pools and, in winter, even ice stalactites.

Guided cave tours

This cave hasn’t been discovered by mass tourism yet. Guided tours are therefore limited. Every weekend and on public holidays, there’s a guided tour at 3pm. In addition, tours run year-round for groups of more than five people. These guided tours are available in both Slovenian and English, but do remember to book in advance. Check the cave’s website at zupanovajama.si

Turjak Castle

Near this cave, you can also visit Turjak Castle. Originally a 13th-century settlement. An impressive castle, and a visit combines well with a guided tour of Županova Cave.

If you’re looking for a unique cave experience in Slovenia, Županova Jama is definitely worth a visit. It’s less touristy than some of the other caves, which means you can enjoy the underground wonders in peace and quiet. Have fun and travel safely!
