Visit Kobarid: history and nature

In the heart of the breath-taking Soča Valley lies a place you won’t soon forget: Kobarid. This Slovenian town is a unique destination where impressive history and stunning nature go hand in hand. Are you a history buff, an avid hiker, an adrenaline junkie or a foodie? Kobarid truly offers something for everyone. It’s the perfect base to discover Slovenia’s rich culture and the emerald green wonders of the country. Get ready for a journey filled with adventures, new discoveries and culinary surprises.

The Kobarid Museum and the First World War

Kobarid is inextricably linked with one of the most poignant periods in European history: the First World War. The town was located on the Isonzo front, scene of one of the largest battles. To understand this past, a visit to the Kobarid Museum is an absolute must. This award-winning museum tells the story of the Battle of Caporetto in an impressive and respectful way. You gain a deep insight into the hardships and the impact of the war on both the soldiers and the local inhabitants.

Not far from the museum you’ll find the Italian ossuary, a monument that houses the remains of thousands of fallen Italian soldiers. The octagonal building stands atop a hill by Saint Anthony’s Church and offers a serene yet sobering view across the valley. Walking here is a moment for reflection and a reminder of the peace we cherish today.

The Napoleon Bridge

Another historical landmark in Kobarid is the iconic Napoleon Bridge. This stone bridge, built around 1750, spans the Soča River at one of her narrowest points. The bridge is named after the French troops led by Napoleon, who marched through here. Over the years it has been destroyed and rebuilt, but its historic character has always remained. It’s a photogenic spot where the clear, turquoise water of the Soča flows beneath. Take a moment to stop here, admire the views, and feel the history captured in its stones.

the Kozjak waterfall

Kobarid is not only a treasure trove of history, but also a gateway to some of Slovenia’s most beautiful natural wonders. The Kozjak waterfall is perhaps the most famous example. After a lovely walk through the woods, you reach a sort of cave chamber where a 15-metre-high stream plunges into an emerald green pool. The light shining through the opening in the rocks creates a magical atmosphere. It’s no surprise this is one of the most photographed spots in the country. Tip: visit the waterfall early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds, and to enjoy this unique place in tranquillity.

Active in the mountains: hiking towards the Krn

The Julian Alps rise around Kobarid, making the region a paradise for hikers. There are numerous trails, ranging from relaxed riverside walks to challenging mountain treks. One of the highlights is ascending Mount Krn, a majestic peak at 2,245 metres. The journey to the top is demanding, but the reward is priceless: a panoramic view over the Soča Valley, the surrounding mountain ranges and, on a clear day, even the Adriatic Sea. For a more historical walk, you can follow the ‘Walk of Peace’, a trail that leads past various remains from the First World War.
