The Tolmin Gorge

In the south of Triglav National Park you’ll find the town of Tolmin. The gorge near this town is the reason why many visitors come here. The Tolmin Gorge is one of Slovenia’s most popular natural wonders. Our advice: you really should visit this gorge. Why? You’ll find out in this blog.

A fairytale land in the Tolmin Gorge

Surrounded by the cliffs of the Tolmin Gorge, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. Whether gnomes, hobbits or smurfs might wander here, we aren’t sure. But one thing is certain: the Tolmin Gorge is stunning.

Idyllic little bridges over crystal-clear water, beautiful scenery, and impressive rock formations. That’s a short summary of your experience in the Tolmin Gorge.

THE WOW EFFECT

Emerald blue water

The clear mountain water that runs through the gorge has an emerald blue colour. The way it flows past the rocks creates a striking, almost otherworldly spectacle. The sunlight’s shimmer completes the magic. You just can’t capture it in a photo. The Tolmin Gorge is something you have to experience for yourself!

Walk through the deepest gorge

A walk through the Tolmin Gorge is very varied. Steps, bridges, even short tunnels. There isn’t just a single route, but several paths to choose from. At the entrance, you can get a map so you can plan your own route for your visit.

The Tolmin Gorge is not very large. The paths are well maintained, but if you have mobility issues, a visit is not recommended. The paths aren’t suitable for wheelchairs, walkers or pushchairs. Dogs are welcome in the gorge (at no charge).

Bears head

In the gorge, you’ll spot a remarkable rock formation. Wedged between two rock faces, the Bears Head dangles a few metres above the ground. It got stuck there after falling down. The rock gets its name from its shape: it resembles a bear’s head.
