Logarska Dolina in the Slovenian Alps

Imagine a place where time seems to slow down. A valley carved by ancient glaciers, surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Where green meadows are scattered with traditional wooden farmhouses and the only sound is the rush of a waterfall. This place really exists, and it’s called Logarska Dolina. This valley, also known as the Logar Valley, is without doubt one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in Europe. It’s a destination that invites you to slow down, take a deep breath, and connect with nature. Hikers, families, and lovers of breathtaking landscapes will all find their place here. In this blog, we’ll guide you and share everything you need to know for an unforgettable visit.

What exactly is Logarska Dolina?

Logarska Dolina is a glacial valley in the north of Slovenia, in the Solčava region. The valley is officially protected as a landscape park and forms part of the Natura 2000 network, a European recognition for areas of exceptional natural value. The valley stretches over about seven kilometres in length and has a wide, green floor and steep, rocky walls. It’s a landscape that seems to come straight from a fairy tale. Many visitors describe it as ‘fairytale-like’.

Why you shouldn’t skip Logarska Dolina

Slovenia is bursting with beautiful places, but Logarska Dolina has a special place in our hearts. Why should you include this valley in your travel itinerary? Here are a few reasons:

  • Breathtaking nature: From dramatic mountain peaks to quiet forests and the thundering Rinka waterfall, the natural beauty here is overwhelming. It’s a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.
  • Peace and space: Unlike some other well-known alpine destinations, you’ll still find real tranquillity in Logarska Dolina. The valley is spaciously set out and even at the height of summer it rarely feels busy.
  • Authentic culture: The local community cherishes its traditions. You can see this in the farm buildings, the local dishes, and the stories passed down from generation to generation.
  • Something for everyone: Fancy a challenging mountain hike, a relaxing walk through the valley, or enjoying a culinary experience at a tourist farm? It’s all possible here.

The best sights and activities

Once you’re in the valley, there is plenty to see. The options are varied, but a few highlights truly stand out.

the majestic Rinka waterfall (Slap Rinka)

At the end of the valley awaits the absolute highlight: the Rinka Waterfall. With a free drop of 90 metres, this is one of the highest and most impressive waterfalls in Slovenia. From the car park at the end of the road, it’s a short but fairly steep walk of about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the waterfall. The sound of crashing water grows louder as you approach. When you arrive, you feel the refreshing mist on your face. For a unique perspective, climb up to the Orlovo Gnezdo or Eagle’s Nest. This is a small, wooden mountain hut built against the rock face, where you can enjoy a drink with a spectacular view of the waterfall.

Walking through the heart of the valley

The best way to experience Logarska Dolina is on foot. The ‘Pot po Logarski dolini’ is a seven-kilometre nature and ethnographic trail that leads you through the entire valley. This route is relatively flat, making it suitable for hikers of all levels, including families with children. The walk takes roughly three hours and takes you past the loveliest spots. You’ll pass babbling brooks, traditional wooden barns (kašče) and information boards telling you more about the region’s flora, fauna, and history. For the more experienced hikers there are plenty of trails leading up into the surrounding mountains, for example to the mountain hut Klemenči Jami for a hearty, seasonal lunch.
