Day trip: most beautiful lakes
Slovenia has a magical combination of azure blue lakes, with a backdrop of impressive mountains and beautiful forests. On this day trip we’ll visit 3 stunning places, one of which is secretly not Slovenian.
Lake Jasna
We start at the edge of Kranjska Gora. Here, in every season, you will find a beautiful lake at the foot of Triglav National Park. Walk around the lake, which is actually made up of two lakes. Or in the summer, take a refreshing dip in the clear mountain water.

From Lake Jasna we head back to the main road heading west. This road quickly takes us to the second stop: Zelenci Nature Reserve.
Zelenci lake
Park your car at the coffee and snack bar Gostilna Zelenci. From here, it’s just a few minutes’ walk along a footpath to the small but very special Zelenci lake. In the crystal-clear water you can see the fish floating, and if you look closely you can see water bubbling up from the bottom. Climb the lookout tower and enjoy the amazing and calming view.

From this point, we drive on to Italy. Yes, we’re crossing the border for a bit. Just over the border you’ll find the Fusine lakes. It feels just like Canada here. Truly worthwhile.
Lago Fusine
About a kilometre after the border crossing, turn left off the main road and follow the road. You’ll come to a barrier where you have to pay a contribution (5 euros) for parking. Don’t park your car right away, but drive on to the lakes. You can also park there, which saves walking for exploring the best spots.
There’s a footpath around the first lake, which can be a little challenging in places. But we definitely recommend you follow the hidden path to the most beautiful spot on these lakes!
From the southern side of the first lake, a narrow and steep path leads uphill. This takes you to the second lake. Follow the path and let yourself be enchanted by nature and the views.

In the lakes you can swim, you can go for a walk, and if you’d like, you can continue on to other great sights.
And then?
For example, continue your route towards the Soča river near Boveč: Velika Korita
Or discover a beautiful gorge in Italy, also just over the border: Orrido dello Slizza. It is quite a long walk (up and down hill) so if your legs are tired, you might want to save this for another day.
