Nature Slovenia

Stegovniski waterfall

In the north of Slovenia, at the foot of the Karawanks mountain range, you will discover one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia: the Stegovniski Slap. This wide, impressive waterfall is a hidden gem and easily accessible for everyone.

What makes the Stegovniski waterfall in Slovenia so special?

The Stegovniski waterfall is tucked away in the municipality of Tržič, near the small village of Medvodje close to Jelendol. This natural waterfall is about 15 metres high and no less than 6 metres wide. This makes it one of the widest waterfalls in Slovenia that you can easily visit. The waterfall is situated on the Stegovnik stream, in the Trzic region. From Green Heart Suites, you can reach it with ease.

Four seasons, four different experiences

Every time of year offers a unique experience at the Stegovniski waterfall:

  • Spring and autumn: The waterfall is at its most powerful due to meltwater and rainfall
  • Summer: Perfect for cooling off in the crystal-clear mountain pools beneath the waterfall
  • Winter: Freezing creates spectacular ice formations that are popular with local ice climbers

How do you get to the Stegovniski waterfall?

From Tržič, follow the route towards Jelendol. On the way you’ll pass the impressive Dovžanova soteska (Dovzan gorge), which is also a beautiful place for a walk. This makes the Stegovniski waterfall perfect for a day out featuring several natural highlights.

By following the road and keeping right, you’ll trace the river towards the waterfall. At the end of the road, you’ll find a car park where you can park for free beside a football pitch in Medvodje.

Handy tips for your visit
