Nature Slovenia

Day trip: most beautiful lakes

Slovenia has a magical mix of azure blue lakes, set against a backdrop of dramatic mountains and beautiful forests. On this day trip, we’ll visit 3 stunning places—one of which, secretly, isn’t actually Slovenian.

Lake Jasna

We start at the edge of Kranjska Gora. Here, in every season, you’ll find a lovely lake at the foot of Triglav National Park. Walk around the lake, which is actually made up of two lakes. Or, in summer, take a refreshing dip in the clear mountain water.

Lake Jasna

From Lake Jasna, we head back to the main road, going west. This road quickly brings us to the second stop: Zelenci Nature Reserve.

Zelenci lake

Park your car by the coffee and snack bar Gostilna Zelenci. From here, a footpath takes you in just a few minutes to the small but very special Zelenci lake. In the crystal-clear water, you’ll see fish drifting and, if you look closely, you can spot water bubbling up from the lakebed. Climb the lookout tower and enjoy the fantastic, calming view.

From here, we continue on to Italy. Yes, we’re crossing the border for a moment. Just over the border, you’ll find the lakes of Fusine. Here, you could imagine yourself in Canada! Truly worth the trip.

Lago Fusine

About a kilometre past the border crossing, turn left off the main road and follow the route. You’ll reach a barrier where you pay a parking fee (5 euros). Don’t park your car immediately; drive on to the lakes. It’s better to park there, so you can save your walking for the most scenic spots.

A footpath circles the first lake, with the odd minor challenge along the way. But we definitely recommend following the hidden path to the loveliest spot at these lakes!

From the south side of the first lake, a narrow, steep path leads up. This takes you to the second lake. Just follow the path and let yourself be enchanted by the natural beauty and the views.

At the lakes, you can swim, go for a walk, or, if you like, carry on to other beautiful sights.

And then?

From here you could carry on to the Soča river near Bovec: Velika Korita

Or discover a stunning gorge in Italy, also just across the border: Orrido dello Slizza. It’s quite a walk (with some uphill and downhill) so if your legs are tired, you might want to save this for another day.
