Imagine if, instead of water, a fountain sprayed chilled beer! Does that sound good? Then pay a visit to the beer fountain in Zaleč. Here, you can pour yourself a beer straight from the fountain.
Beer from the fountain!
No, there isn’t beer shooting five metres up into the air. The beer fountain is an open-air tap where you can help yourself to different local beers. Sadly, you can’t stand under the fountain and fill up on beer for free. Only with a special glass can you pour these beers from the ‘fountain’. Of course, you can buy the glass at the beer fountain.
Beer tasting
The beer fountain has six taps with six different types of local beer. You can decide for yourself how much beer you want to try. You can buy the special glass for 3, 6 or 10 tasting glasses. You read that correctly. No large tankards of beer, just tasting glasses of 1dl beer. Actually, that’s rather nice, because we found we didn’t like every beer equally. So you only have a few sips before you can pour the next one. Naturally, there’s also an option to rinse your glass in between.
Green beer from the green gold fountain?
You read that correctly. Green beer. The special beer with extra hops has a green colour. The hops come from the hop fields around Zaleč. Not only do they look beautiful, but from them comes green beer with a deeply hoppy flavour. Curious? Pour yourself a green beer straight from the beer fountain!
No winter beer
The fountain is open from April until October. During this period, there’s plenty to do at the fountain. For example, the Savinja Valley is covered in aromatic hop gardens, and you can listen to musical performances. In winter, you can still taste the local beers, but not from the fountain. Then, you let a barman pour them for you.
Useful facilities
You can sit comfortably by the fountain in the park near the beer fountain. You’ll find benches here, and there are also two stalls where you can get something tasty to eat. There’s also a clean toilet which is free to use. And as a finishing touch, there’s a camera spot by the beer fountain. Here, you can have a free photo taken of your beer moment, which is then emailed to you.
At the beer fountain there’s a small park with benches and a playground for children. The town of Zalec itself isn’t especially remarkable.
Visit the beer fountain in Žalec
Keen to go? Then head for the town of Žalec. By the way, it’s pronounced ‘Zhaa-les’. Useful when asking for directions.
The beer fountain is a fun stop to combine with another attraction. From Žalec, you’re soon back on the motorway to Celje or the road to Velenje. As long as you’ve got a designated driver who doesn’t drink all the beers, of course.
