Cable car up the mountain
In winter, Slovenia offers fantastic skiing. But in summer, the mountains have plenty to offer too: breathtaking views. In several places in Slovenia, you can take a cable car into the mountains. Which spot is the most beautiful? What does it cost? Where are the best walks? We’ve found out for you.

‘Vogel’ cable car near Bohinj
This is an extremely popular cable car. In winter, it takes you to the Vogel ski resort. But a ride up in summer is also quite an experience. From the cable car and the summit, you have stunning views across the region and over Lake Bohinj.
At 1,923 metres, the peak of Vogel is one of the highest mountains in the area. The cable car takes you up to 1,532 metres at ‘Brown Rock’. Here, you’re a kilometre above Lake Bohinj.
Things to do at Vogel cable car
On top of the mountain you’ll find the starting point for several wonderful walking routes through the stunning local flora and fauna. You can walk to the alpine meadow of Zadnji Vogel, or discover the primeval forest of Lopata. In the area, there are also archaeological sites from the Iron Age and wandering anthills.

Vogel cable car price
A ride on the cable car isn’t cheap. A return ticket costs €29.50.

Kanin cable car near BovEČ
Near the town of Boveč, you’ll find the cable car to the Kanin ski area. The finale of the RTL4 TV show ‘Het onbekende’ (The Unknown) was filmed here. Unfortunately, from winter 2023 this cable car is closed. It’s not known if or when it will reopen.
Cable car to Velika Planina
The Velika Planina cable car lets you visit one of the most beautiful spots in the Slovenian mountains. Set just 3 km before the end of the valley, this cable car takes you on a stunning ride to the Big Pasture Plateau, also known as Velika Planina.

You can take the cable car up daily from 8am to 6pm.
A return ticket for adults is €24. For an extra €2, you can take the chairlift further up the mountain. There are reduced rates for children, seniors and students.
Dogs on the cable car
Your dog is welcome in the cable car. You’ll need to buy a ticket for your dog at 5 euros. Your dog must be clean, healthy, and kept on a lead. A muzzle is also required! Muzzles are also available for hire. Read more about travelling to Slovenia with your dog.
