Day trip Triglav and Soca river

Discover the highest mountain in Slovenia and the azure-blue Soča river on this day trip. On this route, you drive 52 hairpin bends past stunning viewpoints and dip your feet into crystal-clear water.

From Kranjska Gora to Bovec

This day trip takes you from Kranjska Gora over the Vršič mountain pass to the town of Boveč. Your journey starts in Kranjska Gora. You can get here in about 1 hour from Ljubljana, 45 minutes from Podljubelj, and 25 minutes from Jesenice.

The lake before the mountain

The trip starts at the first roundabout in Kranjska Gora. This road through the village leads you towards the Vršič mountain pass. Just before the mountain pass you’ll find Lake Jasna. Stop here and enjoy the view. You can go for a walk around, and in summer, take a dip.

Lake Jasna

The most beautiful mountain route

Continue up the mountain. The Vršič mountain pass has 52 hairpin bends and takes you right through Triglav National Park.

View along the Vršič mountain pass

As you climb, stop at the parking spots to enjoy the views and nature. Stopping at the top is also highly recommended.

Down into the valley

From the top, you get beautiful views down into the valley. Continue the road downhill here. After many hairpin bends and stunning glimpses, you reach the village of Trenta. Here you can have a lovely roadside lunch or a drink. The botanical garden here is a nice stop for plant lovers.

Continue, and the azure-blue Soča river runs alongside you on the left. Feel free to stop at a parking spot and take in nature. There are several footbridges over the river giving you beautiful views of the water.

Soča gorge

Take the exit at this point towards Velika Korita Soča and discover the stunning Soča gorge. Here, crystal-clear water flows between white rocks.

Soča river gorge

In summer, you can paddle here and children jump into the water from the rocks.

From the (paid) car park, you can also walk along the gorge, but it’s quite challenging and not without danger.

Soča river

Where the river widens, quietly sit by the water’s edge and enjoy the refreshment of paddling your feet in the cold water.

The Sunikov water forest

At the car park, most tourists turn back and continue towards Boveč. But if you follow this (dead-end) road, you’ll come to the Sunikov water forest (Šunikov vodni gaj). This is a wonderful area for a walk past lovely streams and small waterfalls. Hiking boots recommended.

After your walk, head back towards the main road and continue towards Boveč.

Visit Boveč

Boveč (pronounced ‘Bovetsch’) is the place in this region for restaurants, cafés, and supermarket shopping.

Return journey

From Boveč, you can choose to drive back the same way via the Vršič mountain pass. Quicker, though, is to go via Italy. The Italian route is flatter, faster, and easier. It also offers fantastic views of the Mangart mountain range.

  • Option: On your return journey via Italy you’ll pass Kluže: an old bunker among the mountains. A fun place to stop.

Tip: Bring your passport. Border controls are very rare, but it is required by law abroad to have valid ID on you. So just in case, take your ID card or passport.
