Sights in Slovenia

What is there to do in Slovenia? Of course, Slovenia is the country of breathtaking nature. Triglav National Park and the lakes of Slovenia are a must on your holiday. But what is there to do in Slovenia besides nature? Which attractions are worth visiting, even when the sun isn’t shining? The following sights add an extra layer to your visit to Slovenia, even on rainy days.

Technical Museum TMS

A big surprise in Slovenia is the impressive Technical Museum TMS. Located near the village of ‘Verd’ just outside the capital Ljubljana, you wouldn’t expect a museum of this scale. Let yourself be amazed by a huge collection of cars, motorcycles and agricultural vehicles. And that is only the beginning. Discover the watermills, the wood processing exhibits and even the wild animals from Slovenia’s countryside.

Cars in TMS museum

The museum is fun for young and old. It’s a great journey of discovery, and we don’t want to spoil it too much. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy the lovely garden and the stream running through the museum grounds. And on rainy days, you can explore this rather large complex. Highly recommended!

Postojna Caves

The cave system near the town of Postojna is so impressive that it attracts many people deep into the mountains. Thanks to the vast number of huge ‘chambers’ it contains, I’d even recommend it for people with claustrophobia. Concerts are even organised in these caves—they really are that big.

Inside Postojna Caves

Besides their sheer size, the cave system is of course a stunning cathedral of stalactites and stalagmites. The metre-high dripstones create a surreal landscape far below the surface. Your tour of the caves begins with a ride on an open train to reach the most beautiful parts of the cave system. From here, you take a guided walk through the many chambers, where your guide will tell you about the history and the fascinating way the caves came into being. Your walk ends with another little train ride back to the outside world. » Read practical tips for your visit to Postojna Caves

Military Museum in Pivka

Another fascinating place in Slovenia is the Military Museum in Pivka. This museum provides an intriguing journey through Slovenia’s brief history. Admire the collection of historic tanks, armoured vehicles and weapons, offering you a glimpse into how this small country managed to hold its own. Discover how Slovenia managed to avoid the Yugoslav war thanks to the 3-day war.

Step back in time and see how Slovenia broke free from the Soviet era and developed into a modern, progressive country. Listen to tales that bring to life the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country. Outside the complex, take a look at the huge steam train and other impressive vehicles that were simply too large to be housed inside the museum.

Whether it’s a sunny day or pouring down, the Military Museum in Pivka offers you a fascinating learning experience you won’t soon forget. It’s an enjoyable outing for both children and adults.
